TAVOLO VIGNETO
Campania
Bordered by the Central Italian regions of Lazio and Molise, Campania is generally considered to be Southern Italy’s Northernmost region. Rich in its history and culture, the area was controlled by native Latin and Etruscan inhabitants before the arrival of the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia in the 8th Century BC. It became the playground of Roman elite, clearly evidenced by the opulent villas that are found at Capri and Pompeii. Later controlled by the House of Bourbon as part of “The Kingdom of Two Sicilies”, the region officially joined the modern Italian state in 1861.
The terroir of Campania is dominated by Mount Vesuvius. Its turbulent history of eruptions has provided the landscape with rich volcanic soil, perfect for the cultivation of brilliant red wines (mostly made from Sangiovese or Aglianico). Structured, fruit driven white wines are also produced here, notably in the areas of Avellino, Irpinia, and Tufo.
