A small growing region located near the Dolomites in the northeastern corner of the peninsula, Alto Adige has long been regarded as Italy’s premiere growing region for white wine. Taking advantage of the high elevation and unique microclimates of the Sudtirol, winemakers here are skilled at crafting a wide variety wines while accentuating the distinctive character traits of each varietal. These are wines of rich personality, wines that boast a complex minerality that goes unrivaled in other parts of Italy.
A rising force in the area’s wine industry, Klaus Lentsch founded his winery in 2008 with the purchase of vineyards near Campodazzo. Committed to low yields and high quality, the estate has expanded rapidly to encompass some 12 hectares of vines across gravelly and clay soils of the Eisack Valley and Uberetsch. Sustainable farming is employed in the steep vineyard terraces, and the wines produced represent an impressive blend of the area’s great white grapes and historic reds.
