Liguria

Located on the Mediterranean coast, Liguria is home to the city of Genoa. The region’s rocky coastline includes the northern portion of the “Italian Riviera”, which shares a border with France and the independent principality of Monaco. Included in this zone are some of Europe’s most famous seaside resort towns — Sanremo, Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli, Portofino. The smaller, picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre are also found in this area. One of Italy’s culinary gems, Liguria is the birthplace of pesto and has long been famous for its Olive Oil production.

Though extremely limited in its annual production, winemaking in Liguria is spread across the region’s length. The geographic constrictions brought by 3 different mountain ranges — the Maritime Alps to the West, the Ligurian Alps to North, and the Apennines to the East and Southeast — have concentrated vineyard cultivation in relatively close proximity of the sea. The Dolceacqua DOC, in the province of Imperia, is near the French border at the region’s Western edge. The other sub-zones surround Genoa, heading Southeast towards Tuscany.
