Lombardia

An international center for fashion and commerce, Lombardia is home to the cities of Milan, Brescia, and Bergamo. This wealthy region shares an Alpine border with Switzerland and its territory includes Italy’s famous Lake District (which encompasses the lakes of Como, Maggiore, Orta, Iseo, and the Eastern portion of Garda).

As with all Northwestern Italy, Lombardia boasts a diverse terroir for winemaking. Southern Lombardia comprises a large portion of the Val Padana, a large fertile river valley stemming from a confluence (located near Pavia) of the Po and Ticino rivers. The aforementioned Lake District can be found in Central Lombardia and the city of Brescia, it’s morainic soil and sedimentary deposits providing the perfect setting for Italy’s oldest zone of Metodo Classico production. The elevation increases dramatically beyond Bergamo, culminating with the Valtellina DOCG that is perched majestically within a mountain valley at the region’s Northernmost boundary.
