Marche

Sharing a border with Emilia Romagna (to the North) and Toscana or Umbria (to the West), the scenery in Marche is captivating. Cradled between the Apennine mountains and the Adriatic Sea, the region is extremely hilly. Its largest city, Ancona, sits on the coast.

Winemaking has occurred in the Marche since ancient times. Much of the region’s wine production is located near the Adriatic coast, where a combination of sandy and rocky soils make for a patchwork of interesting microclimates. The red wines produced (Rosso Conero, Rosso Piceno, Lacrima di Morro) are typically big and unctuous, some of Central Italy’s boldest wines. The white wines produced here, particularly from Verdicchio, are complex and nuanced with incredible structure.
