Located near Arezzo in the heart of Tuscany’s Val di Chiana, the small estate of San Ferdinando is a vibrant and innovative winery, a veritable hidden gem looking to redefine the traditional stylistic limits of Chianti.  Home to the Grifoni family since 1850, the sixty hectare property had long been famous for its olive groves—in 1998, the decision was made to restore the property’s ancient vineyards with some ten hectares being re-planted to the local indigenous grape varieties of Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Pugnitello.  Additional vineyard plots dedicated to the production of Vermentino have been subsequently added, and the property has recently finished construction on a modern cellar and vinification area.

Unlike many properties, winemaking at the estate is largely focused within the vineyard.  Modern technology is employed at a minimum, with the majority of work being done by hand in the time honored manner.  Pesticides are strictly forbidden, and the use of green materials is promoted vigorously.  The end results are wines both vibrant and complex, wines designed to please the most discerning palate.  We hope you will enjoy them as much as we do.
