Sardegna

Inhabited by native Nuragic peoples since prehistoric times, Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The island was a province of Carthage before being conquered by Rome in 238 BC (during the Punic Wars). Subsequently controlled by the Republic of Genoa and Spain, it became a possession of the House of Savoy in 1718.

Much of the island retains its rustic, agrarian feel. Roughly one quarter of the island is controlled under a network of Natural Parks, preserving the unique landscape and wildlife. This and the mountains located at the island’s center makes the region a difficult one to traverse — as such, much of the winemaking is concentrated in two areas (located on opposite sides of the mountains).

Modern winemaking in Sardinia has become known for its Vermentino and Cannonau. While the former is primarily found near Gallura at the island’s Northern edge, the other is found in both winegrowing zones.
