Just north of Milan there is an exciting and vibrant wine region that is almost totally unknown to the American consumer.  Known as Oltrepo Pavese, this growing zone combines the romantic atmosphere or nearby Lake Como with the ancient winemaking traditions of Lombardy.  The ancestral home to such famous grape varieties as Bonarda and Pinot Nero, it is an area ripe for development in the USA.

One of the oldest wineries in the district, the estate of Tenuta Montelio has been in operation since 1848.  Dedicated to promoting the region’s rich winemaking heritage as well as the production of superior quality wines, the vineyards are exclusively planted to the area’s indigenous varieties—Riesling, Barbera, Bonarda, and Pinot Nero.  The grapes are tended, farmed, and vinified in the traditional manner, with special attention being paid to the estate’s 2 main cru sites of Costarsa and Solarolo.  The ensuing wines are elegant and balanced with rich, complex fruit.

Rapidly emerging as a leader in the Oltrepo region, the estate is an up and coming favorite of wine critics the world over.
