A network of picturesque hill-top villages located in the very heart of Asti, the Monferrato district has been home to Italy’s best Barbera for centuries.  Eschewing the allure of other varietals, the growers here have proven that the district’s terroir produces a different type of wine, a Barbera that is far more complex and layered than what is typically found in other parts of Piemonte.  An answer to the big Nebbiolo based wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, this is Barbera designed to age, Barbera designed to impress the most discerning palate.  

 

Lovingly restored by the Alleva family in the early 21st century, Tenuta Santa Caterina looks to take the winemaking traditions of Monferrato to new heights.  Carefully developing 2 key cru sites for the production of superior quality Barbera, the estate has also undertaken the resurrection of the more historical varietals of Grignolino and Freisa.  Produced in extremely limited quantities with an attention to detail that is attracting world-wide attention from discerning consumers and critics alike.
