Overview

Hidden at the base of the Alps, the Alto Piemonte is an alpine paradise set amid forest-clad hills that overlook the Sesia river. One of Italy’s most important regions for Nebbiolo production, this little known, high elevation area has enjoyed a re-birth in recent years. The small handful of DOC and DOCG zones that have been created offer some of the most interesting handmade, terroir-driven examples of Nebbiolo.

Located east of Gattinara, the tiny Ghemme DOCG sits at an elevation of 1,000 feet above sea level. Vineyards were first planted here in the 5th century, most of them boasting sandy and clay soils. A DOCG since 1997, this area is home to the most expressive and fruit forward wines found of the Alto Piemonte.

Famous for his work with the clonal selection of grapevines, Brigatti lovingly cares for the six hectares estate started by his grandfather in 1920 at the top of the Colline Novaresi near Monte Rosa. The Integrated Pest Management method is employed, with vineyards split between massal and clonal selections. The ensuing wines offer a rich, savory character that can complement any wine cellar.
