Overview

The youngest of Tuscany's wine zones, the origins of the Maremma district can be dated to the arrival of the Grand Dukes of Lorraine in 1765. Descendants of and successors to the Medici, they began development of the countryside, draining swamps that had once dominated the landscape and replacing them with rich, fertile pastures and farmland. Vineyard development began in earnest in the area after 1828, when Duke Leopold II took an interest in the district and handed control to several leading noble families.

Perched atop the hills near Cupi, the 13 hectares of vineyards are located near the sea and boast a fantastic exposition that benefit greatly from the influences of maritime breezes. The focus here is on the traditional grapes of the zone, and the wines offer the mature fruit that the area has come to be known for. Of particular emphasis is Sangiovese and its local variant, Morellinodi Scansano - routinely considered a benchmark for quality in the category, it is always beautifully constructed.
