Overview
Located in Switzerland’s Southwestern corner, the canton of Vaud shares a border with France. Its 8 AOC subzones can be found sprawled alongside the banks of the region’s 2 lakes (Geneva and Neuchatel). The winemaking traditions here are truly ancient—Cistercian monasteries began cultivating the region’s steep hillside terraces in the late 10th century. Pinot Noir was famously introduced here (and to Switzerland) by the Dukes of Burgundy in 1420. It is still produced alongside an ancient variety of Gamay known as “Plant Robert”.
Modern winemaking in Vaud has come to be known for its production of Switzerland’s primary native white grape variety, Chasselas. The best Chasselas is found near Montreux in Lavaux. An UNESCO World Heritage site, this unspoiled and protected setting boasts the country’s only 2 Grand Cru AOC sites of Calamin and Dezaley.
Founded in 1927, Les Freres Dubois has long been considered one of the best wineries in Dezaley. Their prime vineyards are majestically perched near the top of the hillside cru, adjacent to the famous La Tour de Marsens. Key plots of vines in neighboring Sant Saphorin and Epesses complete the estate, with micro vinification occurring at each cru site to properly transmit the hill’s plethora of microclimates. The ensuing wines are incredibly complex, designed to age gracefully for decades.
