Mastrojanni

One of the most respected and sought after producers in Montalcino, Mastrojanni has been writing history with its wines from the very start.

Overview

Strategically located south of the town in rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, many of the winery buildings were constructed in the 1380s by the Papacy as part of a fortress network to protect the surrounding lands. Vineyard cultivation is much more modern, and it wasn't until 1975 that Gabriele Mastrojanni cleared and unified the San Pio and Loreto estates into one cohesive property.

Planted exclusively to Sangiovese Grosso, the original Mastrojanni estate utilizes its exceptional terroir toward a singular purpose - the crafting of Montalcino's finest Brunello. The winery's detailed focus and unique approach differs from neighboring estates, putting emphasis upon the quality of each grape rather than the vineyard as a whole. Excess and under-performing fruit are culled from the vineyards in August, and a strict hand selection is done at the time of harvest to ensure only the best grapes are employed in the company's bottlings. The ensuing wines exude elegance, finesse, and an intriguing silky character largely unknown to most Brunello di Montalcino.
