Few places in Tuscany are as captivating as the tiny village of San Gimignano.  Perched atop a steep hill, this quaint and picturesque hamlet has become famous for its medieval towers.  It is also the one of the oldest designated viticultural areas in modern Italy, home to one the country’s most interesting white wines—Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

Occupying two hills in San Gimignano’s Northeastern corner, the Pietra Serena winery was founded in 1966 by the Arrigoni family.  Originally made up of 7 hectares of vines, the estate has grown over the decades to encompass some 40 hectares of olive groves and vineyards.  Many of these are recognized as individual cru sites and undergo micro-vinification with respect to each distinct terroir.  Though Sangiovese has been added in many of the vineyards, the winery’s emphasis has always been on the production of great Vernaccia—the winery offers 2 cru-specific wines and a Vernaccia Riserva alongside its classic bottling.  A Metodo Classico version has also been developed.
