Toscana

The largest region of Central Italy, Toscana sits directly opposite from Emilia Romagna and Marche on the peninsula’s Mediterranean coast. The main cities of Firenze and Siena have long been an epicenter for the arts and Italian culture — home to the Medici and the Italian Renaissance, this area has spawned such legendary figures as Dante Alighieri, Niccolo Macchiavelli, and Filippo Brunelleschi.

The wine making traditions in Toscana are truly ancient. This was the ancestral home of the Etruscans, progenitors of European winemaking. This was the playground of Rome’s elite, the site of countless aristocratic estates boasting vineyards at their core. Jointly controlled in modern times by the Republic of Florence and the Catholic Church, the area has come to be littered with monasteries and castles, all making wine to satisfy its thirsty inhabitants.

Welcome to the world of Sangiovese.

Given this rich history, the terroir for winemaking in Toscana is both immense and extremely diverse. Much of the Tuscan terrain is extremely hilly (a notable exception isthe region’s Western coast), the soils changing from sand and clay in the Maremma and Bolgheri to rocky, marl-limestone closer to Siena and the famous villages of Chianti Classico, Montalcino, and Montepulciano.
