Vineyards have been an integral part of the landscape in Southern Italy for millennia. Likely introduced by native Etruscan and Latin peoples, wine production became prevalent across the Southern peninsula with the arrival of Greek colonies in Calabria and Campania during the 8th Century BC. These Greek cities brought a new trade route to the shores of Italy, one that reached Eastward toward the Aegean and Middle East. In turn, these trade routes also imported the first wave of new grape varieties from other parts of the ancient world.

SOUTHERN ITALY & THE ISLANDS

Vineyards have been an integral part of the landscape in Southern Italy for millennia. Likely introduced by native Etruscan and Latin peoples, wine production became prevalent across the Southern peninsula with the arrival of Greek colonies in Calabria and Campania during the 8th Century BC. These Greek cities brought a new trade route to the shores of Italy, one that reached Eastward toward the Aegean and Middle East. In turn, these trade routes also imported the first wave of new grape varieties from otherparts of the ancient world.

The terroir of Southern Italy is perfectly suited to the production of great wine. There are three primary influences at work here, two of them being volcanic landmarks — Mount Vesuvius in Campania and (the now defunct) Mount Vulture in Basilicata — which impart incredible acidity and structure to the wines that are produced in their shadow. The other dominant influence is derived from each region’s immediate proximity to the Mediterranean Sea.

Sicilia and Sardinia have much in common with Southern Italy. Greek influences abound on both islands, and the dominating influence of Mount Etna on the former cannot be overstated.
